"Boat Race On Wheels: The Oxford Cambridge Trans-Africa Expedition 1954" is the story of an adventure undertaken by six Oxford & Cambridge students in the summer of 1954. Using two 86" Land Rovers they successfully drove from London to Cape Town, the notes, diaries and associated photos have remained unpublished until now, a fascinating snapshot of post war Africa, less than 10 years after the close of war.
'Boat Race On Wheels' was written by Don Calman, edited by James Taylor with photos by Ross Charlton & published with the energy and enthusiasm of my friend Adam Bennett, owner & restorer of both the original vehicles. The 1954 Africa Expedition is the prequel to and inspiration for the well known "First Overland : London-Singapore by Land Rover by Tim Slessor".
I'm proud to say I've became friends with Ross years prior to the publication of, Boat Race On Wheels via my many exploits with another, Adam. It's one thing to have near free reign over iconic vehicles, it's another to be able to film, photograph & become friends with extremely unique & incredible individuals. I'm thrilled to have been involved.
"A Boat Race On Wheels: The Oxford Cambridge Trans-Africa Expedition 1954" is an incredible & engaging account of 6 trailblazing pioneers. A must for any overland and/or Land Rover enthusiast.
