Hi Stewart,
Yeah, you are right. The brand new ones are comfortable doing normal motorway speeds and the new diesel is supposed to be awesome(made by ford if I remember right). All mine were old ones and had been used for what they were intended for, so they were bound to be a bit rough. If your budget permits a brand new one then I'm sure you'll be really happy with it. I know I would be. :)
2.4 does seem small but I've only read good things about them lots saying it's the best diesel thats ever been in a LR. I guess you have to take into consideration that it's made of aluminium (the body) so maybe that's why they get away with it. I think they still do a V8 :). Oh and my old ones went fine in the sand as soon as I dropped the tyre PSI to 12 and stay out of low range. If I were you I think I'd see if I could hire one some where and give it a bit of a thrashing to see what you think. Also in the UK Ive seen a LR dealer in Croydon (I think) that had a test course.
Tengo un LR 90 y tambien 110 (Td5)
mi gusto much todo. el 90 es un poco mas "nimble" (lo siento, no se el palabra en espana) pero 90 y 110 muy bueno en el campo.
(sorry for the naff Spanish... i'm still learning)
I've got a 110 and am building another 90 (i've had about 6 in the past). 90 and 110's are both great off road., the 90 has a slight edge in some terrain (trees and tight areas) but the 110 excells in others (stability, ditch crossing etc) and the 110 can carry a lot more... 90 gets full with a can of coke and a crisp packet.
Yeah, on paper the 90 has better departure angle (the one at the back) as the 110 had quite a large overhang.
Approach angle is pretty much the same between 90 and 110.
Ramp break over, or "belly" (the bit between both axles) is better on a 90 as they're shorter, but to be honest, i can probably count on one hand (during normal kind of off roading, as in, general recreational stuff, not competition where every second counts) where the 110 would be a hindrance.
power to weight, yes, a 90 would be better as it's (a bit) lighter, and that will make a slight difference. but once you stick some bigger wheels on a 90, and load it up with kit, it'll perform the same as a 110 anyway.... good excuse to get a Td5... my 110 has 190bhp... will pull 110mph (eventually) LOL!!
